Actinidia
Actinidia is a kiwi climber. Two species grow ell in Ireland, chinenis, which is a very vigourous plant and would easily cover a large wall or old tree with its large leaves that can measure up to one foot across. If you want fruit from this plant you will need to have a male and female plant to ensure a crop. Flowering in midsummer the blooms are cream in colour giving way to edible fruit. You can expect this plant to grow easily to 30 ft tall. Used in Chinese medicine it is thought that the root of this plant can be used in the treatment of problems with the stomach and pancreas. It is also used in the treatment of gastrointestinal and interracial tumours
Kolomikta is the second species of kiwi that will grow easily in Ireland although it is strongly recommended that this is grown against a south facing wall. This plant is grown for its foliage which is spectacular. The leaves are smaller than that of its cousin and as they mature the tip turn into cream and pink. Over all this plant is smaller in size than the chinensis at about 10 ft and it doesn’t bare flowers or fruit but is a very graceful plant.
Both plants are easy to propagate as they can be grown from leaves cut in the summer.
