Cordiline (palm Tree)

Anyone who lives by the sea in Ireland knows that it is very touch and go with what trees will grow and look good after the storm force winds, well from much experience in this area I can tell you that Cordline (Palm Tree) is one of the few trees that will usually survive.

It is best to buy these plants when they are quite small about one and a half to two fee in height as this gives them plenty of chance to settle into their environment. Do think about where you will put these trees as they spread their roots and they can easily reach eighteen feet in height.

When Cordyline are first put into the ground they look a bit like an ornamental grass, because of their long sword like leaves, but within a few years you should have a tropical style tree that will add a fullness to your garden.

As the tree grows new leaves spring from the top of the plant and the old leaves (now on a strong bark) die off.  To keep the tree looking healthy you should trim the old leaves off and this will give a more layered effect bark.

At any time your tree could start to grow another tree from its bark, this adds another dimension to the plant.

It could take a few years before you have any flowers on the tree so do not be too inpatient.  The flowers on the tree are strong in pollen so the flower although beautiful doesn’t suit everyone, so do bare in mind that the flower can be removed without damaging the plant.
