Formal Gardens
There are certain elements that must be added to class a garden as formal. A formal garden really is structure’s design based on interlocking shapes. It can be adapted for a small garden or large. You can usually see Grand Estate and Stately homes with formal gardens but do not let that put you off because with the use of different materials like decking, paving gravel or grass and containers to soften the edges it is possible to add this style of design to your garden.
Hedging cut to shapes can be achieved with the use of chicken wire, a bit of time and garden shires.
Water features are important and can be used to centralise your design. Your garden can be divided into different area’s and the formal design can flow through, broken down by hedges tall, small shaped and straight path’s leading from one area to another. Statues blend well here.
- Walls and fences - these enclose the garden from the outside world.
- Gates - serve as transition from the outside world and the garden.
- Edgings - take you from one surface to another.
- Sculptures - are a traditional part of history.
- Water features - adds sounds to this otherwise quite place.
- Furniture - is usually large and sculptural pieces but not really very comfortable for sitting on but with a bit of forward planning cushions could always be added if desired.
