 Heat Pumps and Geothermal Energy

When we think of energy for running the home we automatically think of oil,  gas, electricity and fossil fuel, however there are other options in the market that most people have not heard of or do not understand and one of them is called Geothermal Energy. Basically, “Geo” means earth and “thermal” means heat. so when we talk about Geo- Thermal Energy we mean earth heat.

The temperature under the ground is always warmer than the temperature on the surface and how the system works is that collector pipes are buried horizontally in the ground near the house at a depth of around 3 to 4 feet or vertically in a bore hole. Inside these collector  pipes is filled with a fluid like anti freeze which gets circulated around the pipes by a pump. The heat pump then collects this heat energy and convert it to extra heat by passing it through a heat exchanger before distributing it around the house.

Heat pumps have been in use around Europe and USA for years but it is a relatively a new concept in Ireland.

The new heat pumps are very energy efficient and the ratio of heat generated to the power used is incredible. In most cases  for every 4 to 5 kW of heat produced the cost to you would be around 1 kW and that would be for the power used for the  pump’s circulation of the liquid.

With the cost of gas, oil , electricity and fossil fuel going up all the time, you can not go wrong with a heat pump system.

It is true that the initial cost could be more , but over time it will pay for itself and more.

And finally, if you are not bothered about the financial saving of a heat pump, do think about our planet and start using Natural Energy instead of harmful fuels. A heat pump system emits 40% less CO2 emissions than a boiler.
