Mulberry

The Mulberry Bush is not just a well known children’s song, it is actually a tree. It was introduced into Europe about 400 years ago to found the silk industry.

There are different varieties of Mulberry but the main variety in Europe is the Black Mulberry.

It is because the tree only grows up to 20 ft high that many people presume that it is a bush. The leaves are a lovely heart shape. The tree does produce blackberry like fruit but only when the it is very mature.  The berries do eventually turn red and this is when they are ready to eat.  These can be eaten raw or used in jam.  The fruit has been said to taste like Grapefruit.

The Mulberry tree requires a lot of space, likes full sunshine and should only be pruned if really necessary as the fruit grows on the old wood.

As with most plants that we have looked at up to now, this tree has many healing qualities.
