Olearia

Olearia loves strong wind and salt laden air which is why it grows so well here in Ireland.  Ask at any garden Centre what will grow near the sea when all else fails and they will say Olearia

This plant is ideal for hedges as it grows wide and tall.  On average Olearia is said to grow to about six feet but I have seen much taller. The soil needs to be well prepared and the plans grow better in slightly raised beds.

The leaves on this plant are a strong green green on the top with a shimmering silver underside.

A well established plant will reward you with daisy like flowers over the bush during July and August.  The essence of these flowers is used to help relax the minds of people who feel over worked.

As this bush has thick foliage it can be used as a wind barrier to allow other plants to be established behind its protective lines.

While planning your site in a windy area is worth planting your Olearia as your first line of defence, bare in mind that most fences will not be able to stand up against the storm force wind that we have but the Olearia love it.

The plants can be bought at a very low price and from January to March can be purchased bare rooted from as little as €1 each or the rest of the year they can be purchased potted from around €2.50 each.  You need to allow about two years for them to start filling your gaps but if they are happy with the soil conditions they will reward you with their glory.
