Patio Garden

Turning the outside of your home into a compact Patio Garden is an option that some people might dabble in but to bring the outside in is the real idea of this sort of garden. Space is usually limited but the choice of design is vast, as with most gardens it is a case of using you imagination. This garden can be done on a budget and still look fantastic.

Patio gardens are mainly container based so it allows you to redesign the area on almost a weekly bases if you wish or leave the pots put and watch the plants envelop their containers. A medium size statue or small water feature can also be added. Other ideas for this area are Barrels and hanging baskets .

Patio heaters are becoming more popular although if you are not in a rush for one it is best to wait until the end of the season and then buy one at a reduced price as it should last for years and could save you up to €100 compared to the summer price.

Lights can inherence this area, if place correctly they will allow you to enjoy your patio long after the sun has set and on those cold winter morning allow you to still see the beauty of your garden

You should start your garden by choosing your containers. It is best to go for natural materials or porous like terracotta. Make sure that the containers will be big enough for the plants that you plan to use and that they have drainage holes or else the soil could become water logged and kill the plants. Remember that you will have to feed these plants about every two weeks with water- soluble fertiliser or every time you water them you will be washing way their food and your plants will not look very healthy at all.

Long trough’s put by the wall with trellis behind would be ideal for climber.

Some of the plants used in Patio gardens are:

Geranium’s, there are different varieties of this plant some with full headed flowers with buds within the same head and others like ‘ Johnson Blue ’ that have a lot of foliage and light blue flowers.

Petunia is ideal for tubs and window boxes. This plant spreads up and down filling the container with colour.

Nasturtium see Seaside garden.
