What Does It Mean?

Architect: Someone who creates plans to be used in making something (such as a building) .  
Auctioneer: An agent who conducts an auction.
Beam & Block: Used as an alternative to concrete floors. The floor is made of blocks, placed in between specially designed beams.
Bog Soil: Poorly drained soil on top of peat and under marsh or swamp vegetation.
Cavity Wall: Two walls with an space in between usually filled with insulation.
Ceiling: The overhead upper surface of a room.
Central Vacuum Cleaners: A system that has pipes positioned in different rooms through the wall structure and ending up to the vacuum source placed in a different location. i.e. Garage
Chasing: Cut a grove into. Usually for placing pipes and electrical wires
Clay Soil: A soil containing more than 40%clay, but less than 45% sand, and less than 40% silt.
Construction: The act of constructing or building something.
Contractor: Someone (a person or firm) who contracts to build something.
Door: A swinging or sliding barrier that will close an entrance to a room or building
Dormer House: A house incorporating accommodation in the roof space.
DPC: damp proof course, used to stop the damp rising in walls.
Engineer: A qualified person who uses his or her knowledge to help with design and structure of the building and help with the planning issues on the site.
Estate Agent: A person who is authorised to act as an agent for the sale of land.
Floor: The inside lower horizontal surface ( as of a room or hallway).
Finance: The management of money, credit, banking and investments.
Foundation: Lowest support of a structure.
Geo-Thermal: ground heat, usually referred to in receiving heat from under the ground to provide the heating for the house .
Girder : Same as RSJ (Rolled Steel Joist/Reinforced Steel Joint)
Heat Pump: Apparatus that extracts heat from a liquid that is at a higher temperature than its surroundings; can be used to transfer heat from a reservoir outside in order to heat a building.
Insurance Policy: Written contract or certificate of insurance.
Interest Rate: The percentage of a sum of money charged for its use.
Joinery: Fine woodwork done by a joiner.
Landscaping: A garden laid out for aesthetic effect.
Legal: Allowed by official rules.
Lintels: horizontal piece of wood, stone, concrete or steel forming the top frame of a door or window
Loan: A thing that you borrow, a sum of money that is expected to be paid back with interest.
Mortgage: A conditional conveyance of property as security for the repayment of a loan.
Ozone: A colourless gas (O3) Soluble in alkalis and cold water; a strong oxidising agent; can be produced by electric discharge in oxygen or by the action of ultra violet radiation on oxygen in the stratosphere   (where it acts as a screen for ultra violet radiation).
Plastering: The application of plaster, a mixture of lime or gypsum with sand and water which hardens to a smooth, solid; used to cover walls and ceilings 
Precast Concrete Floor: concrete floor slabs ready made and delivered to the site.
Radon: A radioactive gaseous element formed by the disintegration of radium; the heaviest of the inert gasses; occurs naturally (especial in area over granite).
Raft: a floating structure, usually referred to in foundations. It is based on a complete slab of concrete which cover the whole area under the house.
Roof Truss: Structure used to build the roof
RSJ: Rolled Steel Joist /Reinforced Steel Joint used for supporting a load above an opening
Scaffolding: A temporary structure on the outside of a building, made of wooden planks and metal poles, used while building, repairing, or cleaning.
Screed: A layer of Concrete
Septic Tank: Large tank where solid matter or sewage is disintegrated by bacteria.
Sills: Usually a flat shelf or block of wood or stone or concrete at the base of a window and sometime door
Slab: A solid layer of concrete, usually referred to for concrete floors or as a concrete base.
Snag List: A list of errors to be corrected by contractor before the job is complete.
Solicitor: A Lawyer who gives legal advice and prepares legal documents
Solar: The ray of sun.
Steel Mesh: Used for reinforcing a concrete structure
Storage Heaters: An electric heater that stores up heat during the night and releases it during the day.
Underfloor Heating: a form of heating that uses pipes that is in the ground under the floor structure.
Water Level: Underground surface below which the ground is wholly saturated with water.
Wall Ties: Used to tie two walls together.
Weight Bearing Wall: An architecture partition with a height and length greater than it’s thickness used to support another structure
Wetland: A low area where the land is saturated with water.
